Balance of Power

"Hey!", the TSA agent called to the other passengers in line, pointing at me. "This guy doesn't want us to take naked pictures of him, but he does want some guy he's never met before to feel him up!"

I could have responded, "What you're doing isn't right. So I'm not choosing the 'better' option; I'm choosing the option that forces you to do it in public, so that these people can see that it's happening. So that I don't forget that it's happening."

I could have said, "You're forcing yourself on me, and you're going to hassle me about it? You're going to hassle me? Seriously?"

Or I could have just said, "Hey, you're the one taking money to be a part of this."

But in fact I didn't say any of these things. I stayed silent -- because he had all the power in the situation, and I had none. There is no teasing banter between the perpetrator and the victim. You can't hold a gun to someone's head, then laugh it off. I'm just messing with you, man. Don't be so serious.

It is serious.
